The Department of Telecommunications has tightened the rules of consumer verification for wholesale buyers and companies to prevent fraud in SIM card verification. According to the new rules, the telecom company has to check the registration of the company before giving a new connection and the company has to undergo verification within 6 months. The decision has been taken due to the rise in SIM card fraud in the name of companies. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs will have to check the registration of the company. Earlier, the Department of Telecommunications had decided to relax the rules on verification penalties for telecom customers. Telecom companies will not face a penalty of Rs 1 lakh for every small mistake.

The government has so far imposed a penalty of over Rs 3,000 crore on telecom companies for non-compliance with consumer verification rules. The location of the company has to be verified every 6 months. Longitude latitude must be entered in the application form at the time of company verification. The company must also provide information on which employee the connection is to. Telecom companies will have 3 months to implement the new rule.

Earlier, the company had to pay a penalty of Rs 1,000 to Rs 50,000 for each error in the customer application form.
