Zawerchand Meghani was born to Kalidas and Dholima Meghani in Chotila, Gujarat. His father, Kalidas, worked in the police force and was often transferred to new places, which led to most of Zawerchand's education in Rajkot.
He had two brothers Lalchand and Prabhashankar. He married a woman named Damayanti at the age of 24 and after the death of his wife, he married Chitradevi at the age of 36.
They had 9 children out of which 3 were girls named Indu, Padmala and Murali, while 6 were. Boys, such as Mahendra, Mastan, Nanak, Vinod, Jayant and Ashok.
He lived a simple and quiet life and his simplicity inspired his college mates to call him Raja Janaka.
He usually wore a white long coat, a dhoti reaching well to the knees and a turban usually tied around his head. He completed his matriculation in 1912 and completed his B.A in 1917.
He started his career in Kolkata and joined Jeevanlal & Company as a personal assistant in 1918 and was fondly known as Pagdi Babu by his colleagues and workers.
He was soon promoted as the manager of Crown Aluminum's company factory at Belur. In 1919, he went to England for a four-month tour.
After coming back to India, he continued to work in Kolkata for two and a half years. Later, he returned to Saurashtra and joined the editorial board of the weekly Saurashtra at Rajkot in 1922.
In 1930, he was sentenced to 2 years in prison for writing the book Sindhudo which contained lyrics to inspire the youth of India participating in the freedom struggle against the British Raj.
It was during this time that he wrote a poetic triptych based on Gandhi's visit to London for the Round Table Conference. During this period, he also started writing short stories independently and served as the editor of Phoolchaab magazine.
In 1926, he ventured into poetry with his book of children's poems, Veni Na Phool, and began writing in Janmabhoomi under Kalama Ane Kitab. He established his reputation as a critic through his independent novels. In 1936, he became the editor of Phoolchaab.
In 1942, he ventured into publishing with his book Marela Na Rudhir. After retiring from Phulchab in 1945, he concentrated on personal writing. In 1946, his book Mansai Na Diwa was awarded the Mahida Award.
In the same year, he was elected as the head of literature department of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad. In 1929, he delivered 6 lectures for the Jnana Prasaraka Mandali.
Due to his long association with Rabindranath Tagore, he also lectured at Santiniketan. Meghani Manbhatta was also known as a poet due to her significant contribution to folk songs. A movie song Mann Mor Bani Thangat is performed in the 2013 Hindi film Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela.
