Why was it made mandatory for doctors to prescribe generic drugs? What is the benefit to the common people, what will happen due to this?

A law is something that you are forced to obey. Now this weapon of law has been raised by the government against the medical world. Thus many laws are made in the country but the question is their implementation. In 2022, the National Medical Commission issued a notification mandating doctors to prescribe only generic drugs, although the rule did not include any penalty. Now the National Medical Commission has made it mandatory for doctors to prescribe generic drugs and if this instruction is repeatedly violated, action will be taken up to canceling the license. Penalties and any other provisions may look good on paper but one question must surely be asked why the government had to raise the weapon of strict laws against the medical world. Perhaps worse is the situation in which doctors are forced to prescribe generic drugs because they do not prescribe generic drugs at all. Aren't pharmacists also intentionally stocking generic drugs so that the patient is forced to take the branded drug? It goes without saying how cheap the generic drug is and why should the patient spend a fortune if there are drugs that protect against the disease at an affordable price.

1) Rules regarding prescribing generic drugs were tightened

New rules have been announced by the National Medical Commission. The new rules of NMC have tightened the rules on prescribing generic drugs and mandated all doctors to prescribe generic drugs compulsorily. Penalties for not prescribing generic drugs have also been imposed on all registered medical practitioners.

2) What are the guidelines of NMC?

A large portion of the country's income is spent on health. Medicines account for a large proportion of healthcare expenditure and generic drugs are 30 to 80% cheaper than branded drugs. If the doctors prescribe generic medicine, the healthcare costs will be reduced and hospitals and pharmacies should also promote generic medicine and make the patients aware about generic medicine. Taking medicine from Janaushadhi Kendra, Generic Pharmacy Center is encouraged.

3) What is a generic drug?

A long-term research is done to cure the disease and at the end of the long research, the chemical is prepared. In scientific language, the prepared chemical is called salt. In order to make the chemical available to the public, it is formulated as a drug and under normal circumstances such chemicals are very expensive. Salt compositions are prepared by giving this chemical a generic name. This composition is also prepared after many tests and generic drugs are very cheap under normal circumstances

4) What is the provision in the new rules?

Doctors should write the prescription in legible characters and should not write unnecessary drug dosage or unnecessary composition and doctors should only prescribe generic medicine. Doctors will be warned if they do not prescribe generic medicine. Organization of workshop on generic drug prescribing will also be considered. If the rule is not followed despite repeated warnings, fine will be imposed. A doctor's license can also be revoked

5) Why are generic drugs cheaper?

A branded drug costs a lot of research, patents and the company also spends a lot of money on advertising the branded drug. The price of generic medicine is fixed by the government. Generic drug promotion does not cost much. Generic drugs are many times cheaper than branded drugs

6) Also understand this vicious cycle

Generic drugs are often not available in government hospitals and patients are often forced to take branded drugs. A report was prepared by AIIMS on the shortage of generic drugs during the Corona period. There have also been many allegations of collusion between pharma companies and doctors. The government had ordered to prescribe generic medicine in 2022. Visiting rules of pharma company and MR have also been changed. Pharmacists also do not want to sell generic drugs. Pharmacists do not get much profit in generic medicine. Selling branded medicines also fetches 40 to 70% profit. The commission paid by the company is shared by both the doctor and the medicine seller.
