A little less but the biggest update ever on pension, OPS will be available every month

Old Pension News: The demand for re-implementation of Old Pension Scheme (OPS) is gaining momentum across the country. Meanwhile, some states have submitted a new proposal to the central government suggesting a middle path. In this proposal, it has been said that the government employees will be given a slightly lower pension as compared to the old pension scheme. But the important thing is that employees will continue to get regular pension every month like OPS.

What is the new proposal?

According to a report in the Indian Express, the proposal submitted by several states to a committee headed by the finance secretary calls for pensions to be given to government employees on their minimum pay. As per the proposal, when government employees join the service, 50 percent of their initial salary can be given as pension every month. Let us tell you that under the old Pension Scheme (OPS), government employees used to get 50 percent of their last salary as pension.

5 states have already implemented OPS

Let us tell you that Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh are the states where Old Pension Scheme (OPS) has already been implemented. In March this year, the BJP-Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra government also gave an in-principle approval to benefit the old pension scheme to government employees who currently benefit from the NPS.

The old pension scheme was discontinued in 2004

Under the old pension scheme, government employees got 50 percent of their last pay as pension after retirement. There was also a provision of GPF. In the year 2004, the NDA government abolished the old pension scheme and replaced it with NPS (National Pension System).

In March this year, the central government had said in Parliament that it had no plans to re-implement the old pension scheme. Meanwhile, the government has given government employees, whose job notification came before December 2003, an opportunity to opt for the old pension scheme.

The central government has constituted a committee

Demand for OPS across the country has been picking up pace in recent months. The central government has also constituted a committee to review the existing pension system after some states reverted to the old pension scheme (OPS). The four-member committee is headed by Finance Secretary TV Somanathan. The committee will state whether any changes are required in the existing structure or framework of NPS.
